About I was walking about Venice and came across this bit of wall. Nothing really. Just a tad of crumble. There are ten thousand walls in Venice that have the same decay. But something stirred in my wee memory as I snapped this one. A few years ago I visited the Grand Detour place in Illinois where John Deere started his tractor/plow empire. You all know Deere… the “Green and Yellow” stuff what people farm and mow wiff. I was at John Deere’s homestead and did the walking tour. The guide chatted about dis and dat and pointed and commented… and I was bored and kept looking up and about. In one corner of one room I noticed something interesting…. A chunk of the ceiling was removed to show the bones of the building. The plaster and paint pretty coat was stripped off and one could see the original wood braces holding the roof in place. The guide did not say anything about that. Someone just (over the years) thought it would be a good idea to tear off the finished part and let folks see how the building was constructed a hundred plus years ago. Nothing was said but I saw it. And over the past few years that architectural truth has been in the back of my head. While in Venice I saw this and took the shot… plaster gone, bricks laid bare, bricks crumbled to dust, iron braces exposed… rust and decay taking the day… and I thought, “Wow. Like in Grand Detour but wiffout the cool stuff. At the Deere place they ripped open the roof to show us the truth. Here, they let it all go ta hell because no one cared enough to fix it up and that is the truth. How my mind works while walking about. One place did it on purpose to show what we can achieve, another place let it happen and proved there are those that do not give a dam. And the interesting bits of life just keep zipping by.
