... to get something like this. I know you've expressed doubts about tops of people's heads being cut off, but still, what do you think?

Good DOF. I find people shots more interesting than lots of other stuff. Did she know you were taking her picture?

I'm not too convinced about the composition here. With a square crop, a triangular or even central composition could work, but you don't have that here. The lady is just to the right of the centre, so the right side of the image feels 'heavy'. There's not enough bench on the left to 'counterbalance' the woman. Another thing about the crop is that small bit of ankle showing at the bottom. You should crop that off IMO.

The lighting could be improved. Her face, which really should be the main subject of this pic, is in shadows, while there are large bright areas on her blouse (and the hotspot on her neck and collarbone) that draw the eye away from the face. I would suggest some dodge and burn work.

I'd suggest something like this...
