Thanks for the comment and explanation. It helps to have a better view at the situation at that time. Feel free to share the fine memories with me and be aware that her soul may be with you at times for many years .... Good health, Harry

Thank yoy for being with me in grieving for Rachel. Her photo as a child is the only one I have from Mauritius. Her name at that time was still Susie, the nname she was born with in Danzig (today Gdansk) and which she carried until she repatrieted and was old enough to change it. (Susie in Hebrew means "Move!" and that's the reason she changed it.) The name "Sweet Lemons" stem from her experieces on Maurutius that were partly nice and partly ugly and after the sweet lemon fruit she ate in the Land of Israel, at that time still under British mandate. Warm regards, Rafi

Rafi, sorry to hear she passed away last March, the pain and mourning will be still fresh now.
Thanks for the enclosed image with Rachel as a child, very sweet and cute. I assume she was detained bcse she may have been or german origin or similar. I do know the english had those camps for 'security reasons'.
Like extreme lack of water will change the taste of water into 'sweet wine', lack of freedom may have been a reason for the intruiging title of her book.
I have light a candle yesterday for Mary ascension, my mothers death 6 months ago and for several other people I know, I also have included Rachel on that list.
May God bless her soul with love. I wish you good health, dear Rafi. Its a pleasure 'talking' to you. Yours, Harry

I googled the website you sent me and found your father in Indonesia. From hos name I thought the he (and you) ere Dutch and I also remembered the Dutch in Indonesia during WWII. Unfortunately Rachel passed away last March, but her book, "Sweet Lemons" is due in English soon. In it she described her childhood during WWII in a British detention camp on Mauritius. Warm regards, Rafi

Thanks for the comment and photo Rafi. The enclosed image is a bit small but I can locate your late wife Rachel ! Yes, in my dads photo album I found images of a mr Schepel from Holland posing next to a berri berri chief. Most fascinating. Pity you couldnt find my dads pages, but if you do a google find on the following
ssmaritime goldhoorn
you should be able to find the page. The ssmaritime site is set up by Rueben Goossens, he lost his entire family in WWII and he emigrated to australia. His site is most interesting.
Best wishes and hope to meet you again on UF ! Harry

Sorry, Harry. I tried several times but could not find your father's journey. I was also in Indonesia in 1996 for a month, going through Bali, Sulawesi, Sumatra and Java. You may find some of my photos in my portfolio. I send you the photo of my late wife RAchel (In blue jeans) dancing with Sumatra locals, up to 150 years ago cannibals. Best wishes, Rafi

Rafi,
You mentioned the Israeli youngsters that paid with their lives and then I recalled the journey my dad made in 1948 to Indonesia. It is a different story but maybe comparable in some ways. http://www.ssmaritime.com/jvoch3-PW-Goldhoorn.htm is the link to his journey.

Rafi,
I live in the Netherlands. I am born in the province of Groningen and right after graduation I went to Saudi Arabia for installation and maintenance on medical Xray equipment ( cardio vascular angiography ). The visit to Aqaba was in the eid al fitr of 1983. For some unknown reason we did not make it further than the hotel bar. Later with the movie from Harrison Ford I learned what we have missed. Anyhow, after 2 years I was travelling all over the world, Asia, USA. Unfortunately your country is not on the list, I had loved to visit Jerusalem. It was not on my path, yet. Thanks for your description an d yes, I understand your story. Let me conclude with a prayer for peace and wisdom all over the world. "de mazzel" as we say in Holland. I have a feeling you undertand dutch ;) Harry

Hello Harry, Thank you for your detailed reply. I was also in Aqaba just vafter peace with Jordan was signed, as well as at the ancient Nabatean city, Petra, carved in the red rocks. We used to call it the "Red Rock" and many Israeli youngters paid with their lives for going there before there was peace. Your bio does not tell of the country you live in, unless UF means something I donn't know. Warm regards, Rafi

Dear Akash,
In life, giving to other people, without expecting something in return, is an act of love. It is also an act of love to receive a comment and accepting it gratefully, without the need to reply in return.
Love, Harry
