Folk Revival
The people of Laweyan Village in Central Java have been making the traditional form of Indonesia fabric, known as batik, since the 15th century. Its history is so entwined with fabric production that the village actually takes its name from the local word for woven fabric, or "Lawe."
The village maintained its status as the heart of batik production until the industry collapsed in the 1960s as new technology and machinery were developed capable of mass producing batik prints.
Laweyan was revitalized when local officials designated it as a tourist destination. Today travelers visit the village to watch traditional batik artisans ply their trade and shop for locally produced goods.
