About What was it? What was the first book you ever, ever read? Not the book ya just finished, or the one you are reading now. Not your favorite book… the first book you ever read. Think back… the first real book… not a school book, one you had to read… the first book you picked off a shelf and took home because you wanted to read it. Mine???? When I was 9 years old I picked up a book at school on a Friday and read it over the weekend. On Monday (I remember it to this day, 44 years later) I returned the book and I was shaking… I handed the book to my teacher and said, “More! I need more!” I was hooked on reading. My wife is a reader. Both of my sons are readers. My daughter is a reader. I am a reader. For Christmas last my wife, the Lovely Mary Margaret, gave me a book. She knows my history… she knows me. I knew it was a book by feel… I had no idea what the book was. I tore off the wrapping paper and ….., well, I *gasped*. In my hands three months ago I held “Robinson Crusoe.” I was 9 years old when I read my first real book. NO!! I didn’t understand the complexities of the novel… but I remember the hairs on my arms standing up when I read the bit where he found Friday. 44 years later MM handed me a gift that shook my soul. So, what was the first real book you read? The second book I ever read was, "The Black Shield of Falworth."

On The Beach. A novel about Australia after a nuclear war. Read it circa 1968. Thanks for digging up memories.
