City - South-eastern Border State - SIBERIA Country - Russia
About
On a trip from Bejing, China to Irkutsk, Russia, we traveled on the Trans-Siberian Railroad. The only mode of transportation across the China-Russian frontier is rail. To prevent any kind of invasion of eastern Russia, the Russians changed the rail gague (distance between the two rails). This would prevent a rapid invasion from the east. To allow rail travel, a service stop was developed at the border where the wheel trollies could be changed from one gage to the other. The train cars are lifted on jacks, the trollies moved by a crane, and the cars moved for other wheel trolley changes. It took about 2 hours to do a train of about 20 cars. look closely at the tracks and you'll see the two sets of rails.
