Fabulous image! A real masterpiece! Regards, Chris.
P.S. Thanks for the comment on my 'windows' picture. I especially appreciated it as I've seen your work on photo.net and admired it from afar! Having done all the normal stuff, (correcting perspective, levels, cropping, etc.), I overboosted the saturation, created a duplicate layer, inverted it, then wiped away the windows with a rough brush to leave the colours from the original layer. Not particularly clever, but I quite liked the result.

I have a shark phobia...I forgot to comment cause I was scared. ;) I'm a bit wary too Carol, and I never saw the movie! Enough shark attacks in our cold NZ waters put me off at a young age.
Masterfully accomplished Jim!. Funny title. :) You'll be having a bunch of us over for PS lessons!

I'm a former competitive swimmer and seeing Jaws in the 70's kept me in the pool and lakes but out of the ocean for many years to come (I'm still a bit freaked about swimming in the ocean). Like Elizabeth, I had a flashback. :-) This is a very cool idea that has been well executed!!

Would love to help any way I can -- although it may be me who's taking lessons from Elizabeth soon. I'm leaving for Mexico early next week, but will be around this coming weekend.

This is incredible Jim as I stated before and I am glad I came back to see your comment. I dont care how you got this photo - its great and the fact that you were creative enough and proficient enough with photoshop to pull it off is Wonderful. I would like to speak with you sometime about some of your work with merging layers. I will email you when I get some time. I am hoping you may be able to help me in a creation I would like to attempt. I am with Elizabeth - whenever you start your classes; I will be second in line, right behind Elizabeth. Well done Jim.

Amazing work Jim. "JAWS" Still havn't got over that movie & now this! You are quite the artist. You must have some filing system. When you decide to give lessons, sign me up! lol Added to my favorites. BTW, what other site? ha ha ha ha I sneak over there once in a while & I stay out of the forums. That's where the trouble is. I'm glad your work is appreciated here.

Excellent and well realized idea! It seems that the left shark position should make him a bit out of the water while you see it completely under the surface. Maybe, putting it lower... Anyway, great, interesting work! Regards, Y.D.

Irenka,
Yes, I photographed the sharks at an aquarium. It took two visits. The first time, I found that even with a tripod, the light level was too low to get a sharp image since sharks are always moving. I returned with several remotely triggered Canon 550 EX strobes which I used to illuminate one corner of the shark tank. After that it was just a question of patience -- waiting until the sharks circled through the area where I could paint them with the strobes.
Getting a shot that included the boat from both above and below water took a fair amount of film, since my old Nikonos was a rangefinger camera, not an SLR. I fired off an entire 36 exposure roll of Kodachrome while bobbing up and down in the waves with snorkling gear, trying to situate the lens partly above and partly below the water. Out of 36 exposures, only one succeeded. That's the image here.
The PS work was pretty straightforward. I used the screen mode to blend the shark layers into the background layer and hue/staturation and curves adjustment layers to match the tonal density and color cast.
What I love about USEFILM is that people here seem willing to accept photo illustrations for what the ARE -- and not for what you think they should be.
When I posted this at another site, I got the lowest possible rating from one person along with the comment: "This would be an incredible photo, if it was real!"
Thanks guys!
P.S.: In Transit, I wish it were so with my filing system. I do have thounsands and thousands of transparencies in "protective" sleeves, it's true. But they been stored in so many dusty closests, basements and attics that every time I scan an image, I spend the first 30 minutes cloning out dirt specs and scratches.
Yes, my scanner does have a powerful "dust and scratch" remover, but it uses IR light and does not work with either the B&W negatives or Kodachrome transparencies which account for about 99 percent of my nondigital archive!
Thanks again, Jim

Well the 'Lawyers', would not wait so long to attack... (American style) but then he clearly has a good filing system... to keep them at bay... the combo is rather effective... and again the expertise with PS is quite truly impressive... after 25 years!
