Hi John!
I think the lighting is almost perfect, but the composition lacks tension. I guess it would be better a little off center ( tried with a crop of this picture, but I think it doesn't work this way, perhaps better with a further shot ).

this is quite a nice and moody portrait, John - I like it quite a bit! The lighting on your face works quite well, and I like how you seem to 'emerge' from the shadows. I do wish I could see the violin a bit better, though, with the beautiful rich tones of the wood - and, the neck can't be seen at all above your left hand. Overall a success, I would say!

Wondeful lighting and even better where pose and composition are concerned seeing as you photographed yourself. I know almost nothing about portraiture but as a purely personal reaction, i think it could be improved by a touch more string reflection. I'm quite possibly wrong. Aas it is, it's a superb image. Well done.
