For Hermen: Typical of many older Indian homes, the room is a multifunction one. It serves as the drawing and dining room as well as an optional bedroom. The custom is that when one comes in from the outside, one leaves one's footwear outside the door. The stairs lead up to the other rooms which function more as bedrooms. So much for the sociology lesson;-)
