About When I think about the beginning of time, the part of the modern creation myth that I don't really get is the part where the big-bang singularity forms time-space as it expands. If that's the case, then shouldn't there be some some boundary where the universe as we know it meets primoridial nothingness that we don't know? That's the purpose of this image, to visualize "the door at the edge of the universe." I realize the probability is low that there's a gothic door exactly like this one. But I figured that a door is a better pictorial symbol than, say, a barbed wire fence. The background consists of a time exposure of the Milky Way given a "squarist" effect effect in PS, while the door is lifted from my illustration of the entrance to Hermann Hesse's Magic Theater from the novel "Steppenwolf." Confused? Me too. Comments appreciated.

I love the colors, texture, and richness of this one and the punched out figure in the foreground... very creative. The only thing that bothers me a little is the shadow--its density and sharp outline cause it to dominate the image and the perspective doesn't seem to quite fit to me. Hope you don't mind but I tried to play with it a little just for fun.

Isn't there a restaurant at the edge of the universe?

Since there cannot be only just one of these... Your will to know what is not known yet but eventually knowable is clearly acceptable... I suppose !
The more interesting question however, is how do you accomodate your great surrealist technique to your lazer vision... What's the secret ?

I have had a fascination with doors since Lucy opened the wardrobe door in The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. The expectation of what is behind, in your case the great nothingness and all that brings to the imagination...very cool image Jim. Your squarist effect is excellent, the colours rich.

Dear Jim,
Great image, but I'd like an hour or two to write something about creation, time and eternity!
Suffice it to say that nothing makes more sense to me than: "In the beginning God?".
As for 'the end', I take comfort in the fact that the crucified carpenter said: "I am the Alpha and Omega." I believe Him, and I can't tell you the difference that's made to everything!
To say I'm not confused any more probably sounds a bit arrogant. I don't mean it to. It's just that my faith makes sense of most things I see and hear ~ and the little it doesn't make sense of I'm happy to leave till the time when it will.
Kind regards, Chris.

Hi, Jim about your last question in my last image the response is simple. Just get up very early and arrive in the beach about 5:30AM and you get even the most cloud beach completly empty. ;).

Jim; I have no formal critique experience, but if there's something I could contribute to an exhibit of photos/photo-art of yours, I would be glad to do it. I consider it flattering that you would ask me.

Thanks for your recent comments on my landscapes, as you can see, I'm scanning 10-30 year old mostly K64 slides-- lots of nostalgia for me-- and a few good photos. Re Empire Lake(s), being on the Oregon coast, winter temps. are mostly 40s-50s, and only rarely does it freeze here (BTW, I grew up in N.D., so I know about cold). But occasionally it does snow here, and I took advantage of it photographically.

You're observations on my Kiger Gorge pic are "right on"-- it's a flat mid-day shot, and de-sat. didn't help (except for me). Richard Blount downloaded that photo and turned it into a dynamic B&W work w/o ruining it. I think I know enough PSP now to "punch" it quite a bit, and based on the general lack of interest shown here on UF, I'll spend some time playing with the photo and see what happens. (BTW, there's a road up the back side of Steen's Mtn. that we took-- but it's now Wilderness) ;>). Cheers. Craig

What a wonderful image and idea. It's amazing the way you think and create. A door into primoridial nothingness...I want to go there and enter the door and experience it. This image opens my imagination in a very unexpected way. Thank you. (Just read the other comments and I agree with Roger)

Jim; the idea behind this piece is absolutely wonderful, and I like the "squarest" effect on everything but the portion beyond the door. As I look through the door, it's not clear what's there? I think what would really be effective is a clear shot of a galaxy not quite on edge-- or something celestial like that. That said, this is an excellent work that I can only muse about, whereas you can actually do it. I'm really enjoying your "Time" series. Cheers. Craig

It definitely makes me wonder what is on the other side. What is beyond life and space a we know it? Excellent PS work as always. Your work is always very inspiring. Thanks for sharing.

Hermann Hesse! One of my favorites! Jim, This has a nice deep look to it, and puts my mind in deep thought! Going to dwell on this for awhile. Most excellent work, I am enjoying watching your works. My best to you Jim.

I wonder if this door leads to "The restaurant at the end of the universe", a book by the late author Douglas Adams, very hilarious Jim, it would match the style of your door, I think you have done a remarkable job on this, the door looks great as does the "road" to it, good work - Richard.

I like that the shadow person heads for the door before the light one does - adds some weight and fearfulness to the purpose and action...

what could be beyond space? More space? The only edges in the universe are conceptual its an open affair....good image once again Jim maybe the door should be open a bit? I think Herman would appreciate it...roger

I have an affinity for infinity... cool stuff, Jim. I like the triangular composition that starts wide at the bottom and pulls you through the door with the hatted stranger.

Thats a very cosmic door + interesting choice for the background (radiation?). I find the shadow too sharp given the hint of the light behind him. Should we imagine a diffuse light from galaxies, or is the light sharp and narrowly defined?
