you're right - focus is not always important... your photograph gives us that sense of all of our 1st steps - being out of focus gives it that sense of motion that taking your 1st steps bring.. it would've been nice to see better your little one's facial expression - he/she looks a little apprehensive! thanks for sharing.. what does he/she think 10 years later? :)
