About Walking through the woods on a beautiful, sunny day in autumn I met these two... mum and her child. I liked the way the sunlight was shining through the trees, creating shadows on the path. After viewing the photo I discovered some lens-flare, but I liked it even more. There was something magic in that Autumnlight. I wasn't sure about cropping the tree of the right. At first I was a little distracted by the lensflare in top of this tree. Then I start cropping and finally came back to the original photo, because I didn't want to miss that tree on the right. I will add my cropping too... please tell me: what do you think? With or without the cropping? With or without the lensflare? Thanks for any comments!

Such a beautiful moment. They are so precious. and the lighting really does the trick for setting the mood, it just illuminates the horses. Good eye! And i like the composition as well, the tree isnt distracting but rather keeps the eye in the frame. Regards, Beth

DW,
Tough call. I think cropping the lens flare out and leaving both the farmhouse and the large tree would work. We know the light is coming from above so you lose nothing in dropping the flare. I like the large tree anchoring the photo and the farmhouse in the distance gives the whole a sense of walking; not just stopping and looking. A slightly lower crop would continue the feeling of a walk in the woods without detracting from the balance.

Hi Diana,

I would crop the house on the left and leave the tree on the right :)
I don't think the lens flare mark is really distracting, because it is far away from your subject. However the flare also causes the whole upper right corner to be bleached out, you you might want to darken that part a little but (as Chris Spracklen also suggested).

regards,Hermen

The lens flare is a nice touch, Diana. I would definately keep the tree in the frame because it gives balance to the overall photo. Nice touch. If I were to crop out anything in the photo, it would be the house. Great job.

The backlighting is nice . . . It gives a sort of glow to everything. Good use of natural framing.

Beautiful shot with great light and nice mood. IMO the "orginal" works better... the tree is like a natural frame there... well, part of it :-)
My best regards, Alex

Diana,

I agree with the idea of keeping the tree but cropping the barn/house - leaving the tree maintains the mood while cropping the barn doesn't hurt the mood and moves the focal point more off the center.

Mary

btw this is wonderful light - good capture...

Lovely warm lighting. i agree with you about the lens flare. It gives it a nice touch. Regarding my last posting, the sky really that colour on my slide. It is the combination of circular polarizer and the velvia film that gave that nice blue sky.

I go along with my preference for the original cropping. If one thing, it's the house or farm that I would crop, as suggested in part by C. Kohn. The flare and the slight overexposure helps translating the immersion into the shimmering light.

I understand why you had your doubts, but don't be affraid about the lens flare! It gives the image just the right atmosphere! I really like the composition as it is. Follow your feelings, this is GOOD!

Diana; this photo is as much about the atmosphere of the day as it is about the horses I think-- your instincts were good. I think I like it with the tree trunk and the sun flare in the picture as you've done here. But then horses are not my favorite animals. I like the "atmosphere" of this a lot though. Thanks for adding my "Coos Bay Bar" photo to your favs-- that's special. Cheers. Craig

Beautiful lighting and very interesting subjects. I think if I was cropping I would do it from the top and take out the top flare. Don.

diana, while the situation and the lighting are wonderful and very well deserved to be captured, i ambothered by the plabe of the big tree on the right hand side as well by an undestinct part of the (farm?)house on the left. therefore i propose another cropping that goes along with this view. just my opinion and taste of course.
kind regards

Hi Diana! Lovely scene you captured here... :) Yes, the lens flare is a bit distracting... and as far as I know there's not so much to do about it; but you took the right decision to let the tree in the scene; it adds a nice natural framing, which underlines the lovely mood here! Very nice capture!! :) Best regards to you, Gabriele

I think the composition is fine as it is, Diana, but I would have tried darkening / adding more contrast to the top right corner of the shot. This could probably be done with heavily feathered selection and a levels / curves adjustment layer ~ that's if you're a PS user.
Nice horses!
Regards, Chris

Nice pleasing image. I like the one as it is. Sun flare is a minor distraction. Does not distract the image at all unless you point out specificaly. Well done.
