I think a closer look - this is a sort of intermediate view isnt it?

Dan, I think you captured the water pretty well and I think you have an interesting subject. In looking at this for what might not be "doing it" for you the only thing I can think of of is maybe there's a lack of some kind of foreground. I mean all there is is the water, rocks and leaves which compositionally might not be enough. Some greenery in the foreground or a silhoutted tree or bush of to one side. Something to "break up" the main subject, or frame it slightly with contrasting color or texture, lighting or some combination thereof. I'll be there's some technical photographic term for what I'm trying to describe but since I'm a complete and total newbie to photography I can only barely talk the talk, but I know what makes a picture look nice when I see it. A pulled back shot with some of the creek bank in the frame probably would have been all you needed here, or something similar. Otherwise, excellent lighting & colors & I think the exposure is just right. Good luck.
regards, Charlie

I wonder if part of the problem may be the difficulty of capturing water realistically under these circumstances? You might have found a polarizing filter helpful in adjusting the relative intensities of the reflections, and perhaps enhancing the "see-through" effect that would make the water look more real. THere's definitely something odd about the water flow in the very center of the shot. It's also a little "soft" overall. I think you were probably setting a low ISO to get a longer exposure maybe to get that blurred effect in the water flow? That's VERY difficult to get right, and may have tripped you into a bit of camera shake if the depth of field should have been enough to ensure sharpness. The colours and different shapes of the leaves work for you in this picture, and of course are the best thing about it. Overall the image is appealing (I mean, look at the comments you're getting!), but I've tried to respond to your appeal for help.
