this picture desperately wants to be on a fine-grain film. the thumbnail looked wonderful, but the full-size picture falls apart because of excessive grain. your instinct on abstractions is good, but the asa400 film does them in. you can go as long as half a second with slow film and still get excellent detail on posed shots like this.
