I love this one. The family is speaking to me - showing their joy of what looks like a new family member. I can imagine Dad handing out cigars. Having him lean in like that - he is almost poping out of the photo. Nice one.

There was a sliding glass door to the right (see how the mom's back is a bit lighter?), so there was some additional ambient light. I think I was about 7 feet away from the family...just enough to get the catchlight on their eyes from my flash that was angled up towards the ceiling. I set the flash on full power manually since I knew I was bouncing off the ceiling (and this doubles the distance the flash has to cover), I was hand-holding (not on tripod), and my camera was set on manual mode.

Great emotional content coupled with technical quality. A very inspiring portrait.

What other light sources were there besides the flash? How far away from the subjects were you? Was the flash in auto mode or did you set the power manually? Which camera mode were you using? (I've recently purchased an external flash unit and am trying to figure out how to use it effectively - hence all these questions.)

Beautiful family! Also, thank you for your help with the lens. I've come to a better understanding of the lens..and I'll try to experiment and post my work. Thanks again. Continue your great photos!

That's a very nice family portrait. That baby is absolutely adorable! I like the closeness and the crop, and the grain in the b/w is quite nice.
