Neat! I just tried that on another image. I've used the "levels" tool before, but never even saw that "auto" button there: I've always just dragged the sliders.
I've got lots to learn...your help is appreciated!

Cool, I'm using "The Gimp" as well ;-) opensource rules eheheh. Regarding the effect I used, I simply adjusted black, gray and white levels using the menu tools/color tools/levels and then selecting "auto". After this I tried to pick up three points: black gray and white using the three color-picker icons shown on the same gimp window. After that I applied a unsharp mask, using filters/enhance/unsharp mask using radius 3.0, amount 0.30 and 0 as a threshold. Of course your mileage may vary ;-)
I hope not to have been too obscure! of course if you have any other question please ask, UF is a great place to learn, and it's teaching me a lot :-)
Cheers, Fabrizio

I like the changes; could you explain what you did to get that effect? I'm just starting to learn a lot of the digital darkroom techniques...I'm using "The GIMP," though I find a lot of the techniques are common to all editors...just where you have to go to find them!

I like this kind of still life macroes. Melancholic and thoughtful. Too bad that the door hook has been slightly cut off the crop. I tried to give it a different light:
