Playing with focusing! Knowing that focusing on geranium will put background out of focus, placed the pot on the grass, outside and zoomed on the flower. It makes the background look like a green sheet.
les.. you do have a good scanner, but i think it is the post processing that matters. I used to get soft unsharp images. Then i learnt two things; to sharpen images i use; unsharp mask or with my SuperJPG slideshow software i selected Filter > sharpen moderately. The 2nd thing is to remove grains, i use a software called: NeatImage, which removes all grains and makes the shot look almost digital like quality. If you look at my "Yellow Dew Drops" - a yellow daisy?? flower you will see neatimage application. And of course i use "VueScan" to scan in film/slides, so i can do a 48 bit scan, instead of 24 bit scan. i believe a 48 or 36 bit scan would scan not only the 8 bit colors, but depth and shadow information. hope this helps. As far as the above image is concerned, it is a well composed, well lit shot.
