About Shooting and watching youth karate has been interesting as I see kids in all shapes and sizes doing things that I never would have expected that they'd be able to do! What a great sport for youth athletes...

Dan,
I think you?ve mastered digital action shot?s (this is not easy to do), do you shoot continuous mode or just have perfect timing? Well, I?m going to take the liberty of being the first to rate this I guess.

Composition: 6 the only thing I would have done differently I guess is to include his foot, to sort of plant him to the mat, or at this point maybe crop it in tighter to exclude her foot, this is just my personal opinion, not a fact. The angle you shot this is perfect, perpendicular to that kick. The depth of field put him at the center of focus so maybe even crop everything to the right of her eye out.

Lighting: 7 as I said before on another one of your pictures, you couldn?t control the lighting so you compensated for it with aperture and iso and did a perfect job at it.

Originality: 7 I don?t fully understand how original one can get with an action shot without it becoming an abstract, so I?m going to give it the average of the other categories

Emotional appeal: 7 you just have to love kids, so determined at that age. The title fits.

Overall: 7 it fits the project and subject category, great focus and timing. Maybe I don?t know exactly what to look for since I never went to art school etc. but, I do have eyes and if that were my son, this capture would be framed on my wall. A situation like this would be a perfect candidate a higher iso and smaller aperture also, like 5.6 or 8 to get them both in focus. Post process some motion blur to that kick? and blah blah blah? just a thought.

Well, sorry for writing your eyes out here, I just thought this one needed more than an arbitrary ?nice shot dude? comment. Plus I don?t really like to give the first rating to people, so I just wanted to explain exactly why I rated this way I did.
-Mike

P.S. I?ve got to get me one of those 1D?s ;-)

The color are really nice! You wrote iso800, is it true? I get a really poor quality when using iso400 digital.

Good action shot!
