About Tragedy was narrowly averted at the Santa Monica Pier carrousel last week as a stampede began shortly after closing time. Officials attributed the incident to a sighting of termites. No horses were seriously injured.

Do you make your classes laugh like this? I'm a teacher but at the elementary age and if you don't laugh you cry. Excellent photo. After reading the other comments, I'm happy with what you achieved in this photo. I think the more narrow crop looks more tragic and therefore is funnier. :)

The horse was very close to the window inside the building, so the only way to see the whole horse was to get within 6-8 inches of the window. (Or maybe get higher up, but the tripod legs are only so long...) There were also severe reflections from the window. A shot using the window frame as a frame would be nice but probably not possible under the circumstances. Sometimes one takes a shot knowing it won't be great, just hoping for at least good (even that was in doubt with the low light and the reflections, so I wasn't unhappy with what I got.)

Ken, I would pose the question "So what?" to the blurry window frame, Any chance of trying to use that frame to help tell a story with this photograph? Sometimes its more fun to shoot it just to see if maybe just maybe it would have worked better having something "framing" the horses. Just a thought.

Well, you're right, but I was very constrained, shooting from outside the (closed) carrousel through a small window at night. Any wider and you'd see a blurry window frame. I couldn't get the distant horses in horizontally, so I went vertical and cropped off the top. One has to make do.

I think the idea here works very well but I tend to see these types of images square for the simple reason the primary horse needs to have a bit more space on the sides. I get the strange feeling of tunnel-vision when trying to feel what you intended.

This is cruelty to animals. Look how neglected they are. I am going to write a letter!
