Roger, I think the softness is an artifact of the scanner's ICE software which does a great job removing imperfections from old slides and negatives and seems to work sort of like the Dust and Scratches filter in Photoshop. It actually seems to introduce less softness than the D&S filter in PS. Also, I don't think I applied enough "unsharp mask" in PS to correct for that.

A very strong face. The kind of man the word "patriarch" was created for. Is the softness an artifact of the scan? I know the Helios can usually do better than this.
