well-done - much has been said about this already so I won't add my two cents - I will just say that it is well-done and that is something I appreciate...

Steven, what an amazing and thought-provoking picture....indeed a decisive moment well-captured...the expression on the child's face...the picture of the foetus being placed almost as a part of a progression of events...foetus...child...adult
The framing works well also
Well done

Amazing shot Jason... this is a very powerful image... and yet it allows the viewer to perceive from it what they will.... It's amazing how much the message here can be conformed to one's belief's... sort of like the bible that way... great job and complete 7's.... won't be surprised to see pod...

Ummmmmm, I think that the point of this photograph is being missed here. I am an activist myself and I see this photo evident of a woman at an anti - abortion protest where the sign bluntly states that a decision to abort a child is not just a matter between a woman and here doctor.....that it is leaving out the child within here womb! Read the poster. I don't understand why everyne here thinks the statement behing this photo is so abstract. Steven was able to capture a powerful statement that was being espressed at that moment, nothing else.....to him my hat is off, brillant Steven. I am enjoying your point of view!

I just want to add that sometimes soft focus barely hurts the quality of an image. I think thats the case here. Sure, it might have been better if it were completely sharp. But I think the message is still very clear, and very strong.

Sorry Jason. I read your post too quickly and then wrote words that were different than what I had straight in my head. You're absolutely right - you didn't try to interpret meaning. What I should have written down was that I saw the photo's focus a little differently. (I think "interpret" was a poor choice of words on my part.)
I'm not trying to evaluate or compare conclusions people make from this photo. I just wanted to state that I liked this photo because it can be perceived (and yes, interpreted) in many different ways. I just didn't properly say what I really meant, so thanks for bringing my attention to that. :-)

The elements at work here make this a very successful photograph - visually and conceptually. The fact that the viewer can draw his/her own conclusion of it's meaning is evidence of that. There is no interpretation of meaning in the first post, nor was one intended.

I suppose I interpret this photo a little differently. I see the decisive moment here as the captured expression on the little girl's face. It looks like a wary glance, but I suppose that expression could be the result of a number of different feelings. Maybe sadness? For some reason I feel sorry for her.
The thing I like most about this photo is that it's not overtly political. It doesn't take a side, it presents a moment (decisive moment!) and lets the viewers draw their own conclusions.

The decisive moment with a stroke of genius - what an excellent image! The black, formless mother - a visual division and conceptual connection between the message of the sign and the child at her hand. We learn a lot about this woman without seeing her. Great work Steve. Too bad its a bit soft though - uploading variances no doubt. Keep shooting!!
