This is the site of a mission church built in the 13th century, on the grounds of the Taos Pueblo, the church was destroyed in the 15th century and never re-built. The grounds around it are in a walled area and as the Indians who live there die they must re-use the graves sites due to limited space.... that is why you see the pile of crosses pulled and stacked... making room for the recently passed... In addition many of the Indians believe in both the catholic and aboriginal religions and many are still buried up in that mountain.. their family does not know where and all of their personal items are burnt when they die. People have been living here for over 900 years.. w/o electric or plumbing...
