I understand the critique. It is actually more apparent to me in the thumbnail than in the
full frame. I understand how to boost the lighting (will actually have to use that strobe I guess), but
am not sure how to 'fix' the composition and still maintain the POF in the far left of the frame --
with essentially the rest of the frame in fuzz. It may not be possible with this backdrop. Any
suggestions anyone?

Chris you have a good idea here and that is clear...however some things are bitting you on the A"""....light is flat and is not giving you a punched ("BALLSY") flower..although the flower looks ok here...the background rock makes a nice backdrop for the flower.....the angle of the rocks and the perspective is leading you up and away from your POF (point of focus) the flower.....you got a nice soft blur on the background which is nice but the lead away is hurting your concept here...the rolling layes of sand are creating another lead out to the top left because they are on a opposing diagional to the rocks.....so the composition is getting chaotic and your POF is lost....
addimittedly theses varing effects are creating an INTERESTING overall image but one that tends to be tiring to view rather than arresting.....subsequently a viewer will stop looking because it is tiring......I think you saw something very interesting here and tried to get it to work which is very, very commendable.....keep at it Chris in a short time you'll develop your visions into more tangible results and kep on experimenting...only way to learn....I hopee I made myself clear enough to you in the critique of this ...and by the way you can crop this down to just the flower and background rock, nice and tight and have a decent image.....keep at it...
