I have walked through one of these, at Kingston, many years ago....in summer. Must have been a bitterly cold post to stand. Very evocative image. The tree as counterpoint to the tower, comments in a way on the foolish construction of a fort.
I gather the one in Newfoundland is the tower that Marconi used for the wireless transmission. I think that's right.
