I'd love to go with you on a shoot. Horizontals are probably the only thing I'm qualified to advise on! I suffered from Meniere's disease for years, but am in remission right now and have been for a couple of years, so I know what a trial ear/balance problems can be. I'm one of those freaks that just HAS to go around setting pictures square, y'know? My first really wide lens (21mm) nearly drove me mad it was so sensitive to the least departure from horizontal. Now I've got used to it, it's my favourite lens.
About the people, I gather that they were condemned out of their own mouths! A shame. Again, it's a great shot, John. Love it.

Roger - I'm going to ask you to join me on my shoots to help me get my horizions level! I checked, and I'm off 5 pixels out of 200. FYI I do have an ear problem that results in a markedly impaired sense of balance and for me horizontal and verticle are a compromise. What you are reacting to though is more subtle. The pier is not flat. The last section going out to the round house rises just enough to more than compensate for the expected drop due to perspective. Hence is looks a bit more uneven - because it is! I know what they feel because I had been up there 10 minutes earlier listening to them.

I don't think the horizon is tilted - it looks as if it's the pier.
This is quite a stark contrast to your colour photos of the same subject - the mood alters quite dramatically. I like it! At first, I thought the ghosts was in reference to the breaking tide on the shore . . . until I saw the subject line. Still, I like the dual interpretation and that both the sea and the people on the pier are conveying the same atmosphere and intensity.

John, how do you know what they feel or see? Just curious. This picture has a great mood and technically it is very impressive. Hate to say it, but the horizon is sloping slightly upwards to the right.

Excellent work... I am wondering how long a shutter and what time of day this was taken!
