wonderful! excellent composition. esp. like the way the manes are backlit; gives this an ethereal quality. reminds me of visiting a friend's horse farm. they would run right up to you when they saw you approach. this is my favorite of your horse series. quick question: why do the pix in this series show jaggies? scanner mishap?

btw, thank you so much for your comments on my deer pic. actually she's a fawn (maybe 1 year old). there must have been 40 of them in this field but you could only see a dozen or so at any given moment. the rest were all laying in the grass.

take care...

Mandy I think this is great! Nice light and framing, I also like the large depth of field that you used. Some may think it takes away the impact of your subjects but I think it's interesting and that your image is strong enough to stand as is.

A far as the Africa photos. If your shooting with a Nikon 100-300 you should be able to work with that for now. If all that I shot was wildlife I would be using a Nikon 500 F4. But it's a large investment for a lens that I would only pull out 15-20 days a year. I tend to shoot a lot of everything so I went with a 300 2.8. It's great for Fashion, sports wildlife.......When shooting wildlife I usually use it with a 1.4 teleconverter which gives me a 440mm 4.5. There's no loss of brightness or clairity with the converter.
When you get into the heavy fast glass, you obviously need less light but it putt?s you in a whole new world when it comes to sharpness and your ability to set for nearly 0 depth of field. The Large fast glass also compresses distances. In other words if you were to shoot a cityscape and the first tall building in you shot was one mile away, the second two and the third three. Using a large 300 or 500 lens will make them appear to have only feet separating them. Anyway I?m sure you already know this.
To answer the question regarding f/stops and s/s. With Wildlife when I?m moving and the light is constantly changing I generally shoot on shutter priority. Which allows me to insure a fast enough shutter speed for a sharp image. At 440 I try for 1/350 but will go lower if need be. Another reason is the Animals will never seem to wait for you to get ready and if you messing around with your camera you?ll miss the shot nearly every time.

Also for wildlife ?down the road? start using slide film and set you F5 on auto bracketing. I use three photos one photo on the meter one 1/7 above and one 1/7 below. I?m sure there will be those that will disagree but in my opinion nothing even comes close to transparency film. ?Sharpness, color, saturation and your ability to reproduce the photo for any medium.

I?m sorry I was long winded and I?m sure that I covered much that you already know, but I just wasn?t sure.

You?ve got camera, just keep working with the lenses you have for the time being. As long as you?re motivated you?ll be great.

If you have further questions please feel free to e-mail me at roy@vanoverphotography.com

Thanks, Roy
