Well, I see that as a cropping option. I was liking the worn grass at his feet and the entire look of him as he stands there and showing that he is on a street curb side. The cropping you suggest does bring him out as a subject better, but I think the photo looses the street feeling.

Thanks for helping me to see this photo differently.

There's a bitter irony for you... I wondered if this might be better cropped in closer to the subject, or perhaps set up differently so as to get rid of the grass but keep the bleak, warehouse-style background (extends the irony beyond the individual and to society in general, maybe?) I tried cropping it to see what it might look like.
