I forgot to mention I used the Canon 550EX for direct flash & bouncing off of ceiling.

To answer your questions, this expressive black lab, "Scooby", is sad because it is pouring rain. Moreover, his owners are sick with the flu and are in no condition to take him out for a walk or play with him. Thus, he's feeling sorry for himself. Fortunately, I was not sick and able to play with him later on. Unfortunately, I could not play tug-of-war with him and take pictures of him at the same time... Perhaps another day when the sun is shining or it is not pouring rain.

Well, neither. The direct flash is too strong (not to mention it probably isn't very pleasant for the dog), the bounced flash has left a not-very-good-looking shadow on the left side of the head and also between the eyes. Perhaps if you combined bounce flash with a reflector the result would be better.
And what about natural light? ;-)

Hi Eveline,
I definitely prefer the bounced version. In the bounced version the tones are much more gradual, and there are no "hot spots".
The dog is very beautiful too. Tell me, how do you train it to stand so still? And why is it so sad...?
Regards, Angelo.
