WOW........... Fred,
Super... CONGRATS!!! we had one of those as pet when i was younger and i cried my eyes out when it flew away and fled... too bad a neighbor caught him and my pretty pheasant ended up in a pan! we had it as a pet and never intende to eat the bird... it was often quiet and friendly and seemed interested on what we were doing at our backyard...
i also saved this picture within my Favorites!
my Best, Reggie

Nicely composed picture of a beautiful pheasant. Quite different to the golden pheasant in the attached picture, which looks like a comical chicken! Lorinda in Australia

Well, now that someone has brought it up. Pheasant are Eurasian in origin. They've been introduced to North American and Europe as sporting game. According to Sibley's, this photo is, more or less, a hybrid Ring-Necked and White-Winged pheasant. The Ring-Necked is listed as from Asia and the White-Winged is from Afghanistan (which borders Iran). The Sibley's also mentions that North American pheasant are all an amalgam of many different subspecies. New hybrids are being introduced constantly to maintain game populations.

Hi Fred, If I remember correctly, the pheasant was originally introduced in Europe by Marco Polo, he brought some specimen from the Persia. Since then, these exotes have adapted themselves fully to the European habitat. They now roam freely in large numbers, but slowly decreasing due to the intensified agricultural methods..... Great shot, and I fully understand the use of maximum zoom and teleconverter. Any closer and the alert bird would have ducked and vanished in the undergrowth. Excellent capture, my compliments!
Cheers,
Hugo
