Hi rog, slice of life here..busy going somewhere, it looks like it is still cold by the colors. A very nice shot. I saw the slope in my pic once I sent it up and I had my ISO setting way to high 800 and it was a grey and mist day. I had to work it in PS to get rid of the noise hence the softness....rog

Thanks Chris. To answer your question, most zoom lenses suffer from this; it's a trade off for their very great convenience. (This is one of the reasons I prefer to zoom with my feet!). There is a complete and perfect answer if you look at PowerRetouche plugins for PS. There are other plugins, but these are particularly comprehensive and easy to use for lens distortions, and singularly free from image degradation. Google search will find you the site and there's a free demo you can try. Thoroughly recommended.

P.S. Regarding barrel and pin-cushion distortion ~ is there anything you can do to stop or reduce it? Am I going to get the same problem whatever camera I buy next, or are some better than others? I admit that it's an annoying defect and I'd like to do away with it!!

Hi, Paul. I visisted your Alamo photo. Impressive stitching! You have overcome (or lucked out on) the biggest problem with stitching--people who appear on more than one shot! On the old Usefilm I had an article on taking panoramas and in it I mentioned stitching. You might find the other approaches, including my wonderful TX-1 camera, interesting--if they ever put the article back up.
PS The reason for the grey border is I reduced the brightness of the image after adding the border! Duh!!

You can always take multiple standard-sized shots and stitch them into a panorama, Roger.
I did that with the Alamo, which created a rather large 7800x2000 pixel image:
