Yes, I used the flash as a fill - the sunlight was too strong and I was shooting almost against the sun. As about the red eye, this particular pigeon has nice eyes..

Very sharp, good back lighting (was the flash used as a fill ?) , composition follows the rules. What makes the photo is the red coloured eye.
