thanks for the advice. I can indeed adjust the ISO on my camera. I will try this in the future. thanks

Maybe the graininess of the image is related to a high ISO setting? Higher sensitivity means higher oise usually. Check if the ISO number of your camera can be adjusted, if so, choose the smallest number. You might need a tripod because the shutter time will increase. To reduce the noise in thsi particular image, you may try a post-processing filter (NeatImage seems to be a good one, you can download a trial version from www.neatimage.com)

It's a great shot! I don't know where the graininess is coming from. is it in the photo or the scan?
