Well it's actually kind of embarrassing, I just discovered a focusing feature I was totally unaware of...Doh! Ironically, I already know more about the camera I want...the Nikon D70, than I did about the camera I already have. I'm correcting that little over-sight, though.

Nothing wrong with being fascinated by cracks in a sidewalk :-) It's great that you're looking around and SEEING things.
What did you learn about your camera?

"making an appealing photo out of an ordinary (or even 'ugly') subject is where the fun and challenge begins"
The trouble is...when I am in "seeing" mode...when I'm looking at the world with still capture isolation...everything...every little thing seems beautiful. I am hopelessly captivated by textures, lines, and shadows. I have to be careful not to do this while driving or be in danger of running off the road. In public places it must seem strange to others when I pause in fascination at the cracks in a sidewalk, or stare in wonder at the trembling leave of a stray weed. The challenge I find is capturing things how I see them. To somehow create a photograph which expresses my reverence for the simple exquisite beauty I've found is my goal...and one I find I fall sadly short of many times. I hope that in time, I shall improve.
I can tell you that I've learned something new about my camera, and from now on, my photos will be a lot sharper. yay!

Shoot more stuff at 3am, I find this a good way to present the subject, though a touch more contrast and sharpness probably wouldn't hurt. The slight tilt together with the low angle of view add dynamism, the simple BW frame is very fitting for the image.
To add a bit of philosophy, you don't need a 'pretty' subject to make a good photo, furthermore it's relatively easy making an appealing photo if the subject is already pretty; but making an appealing photo out of an ordinary (or even 'ugly') subject is where the fun and challenge begins.
