About This is a common dragonfly in S. Louisiana. I have a couple of these females hanging around my gardens but have not seen any males. As the name implies, the males are blue. Hopefully I will get one soon. I used 36mm of extension tubes on my 80-200mm lens for this shot. Tripod was used with self timer and mirror lockup activated to minimize blur at this long exposure. Flash was set to -1.7ev (used for fill only), ISO-200, NEF Raw, Camera to subject distance about 10". This is about 80% of full frame. The only post processing done was USM and levels adj. Image taken about 3:00pm today, very cloudy conditions.

That small red dot on its leg is a parasitic mite (I think).

Wow, there is enough detail to manufacture these creatures from this photo. How long do they sit still for, and do you focus manually? It looks like your lens setup gives you a good depth of field at that distance, I guess about 20mm.
