Very touching photograph, especailly to a dog lover like myself. The black and White was an excellent choice and it is wonderful to see that someone puts enough emphasis on the value of a dogs life to do this for him. Very nice job. Carrie Rankin-Watkins

I love the expression on this dogs face. I had an old dog that was abandoned at a vet and was going to be put to sleep. I happened to be there with another pet of mine when I heard this. She too had no use of her hind quarters. I adopted her. I couldn't afford to buy one of these wheelchairs so I tried to build one for her. She died the day I finished it and before I ever got to try it on her.

Aside from the fact that this is a wonderfully exposed and composed photograph, the subject pose if magnificent. I can see myself loving my dog or my cat in this way. Treating our fellow creatures as we would a human being. Fantastic. Beautiful choice.

Wow! This made me cry-- happy and sad tears. This picture needs no improvments. It's beautiful. It's my favorite image on this website now. I see lots of personality in this dog's face. I'm glad to see that he/she is in good hands. This image will be on my mind at least all day today. I just want to hug that dog. Great work Dennis!

Interesting picture with a hidden message.
At first glance, it's an image that tells the story of a brave dog and a loving master.
On second thought, it shows how pets in america and europe receive better medical treatment than millions of people in thirld-world countries.
And not just third-world countries, as the location of this shot illustrates. This dog is better off than many New Yorkers who can't afford health insurance.
That makes this a great picture. Even if the alternative message is unintentional.

What a great shot, a more unusual find, and well composed indeed. In 1995 in a small opportunity shop in rural Tasmania I sighted a "dog-with-wheels". Unfortunately I didn't get a shot. Dogs with buckets around their necks is a more amuzing sight, I have a great shot of one in Germany with it's elderly owner, but not with me here.

What a wonderful powerful image. A beautiful dog who is obviously loved very much. Look at his stance and the way he holds his head. So proud and noble.. He does not think he has a disability and he would not look at you because he wanted you to know that. He wanted you to capture him as if he were standing on point. No matter his tail is down, his head is held high. The tones and lighting are perfect and so is the height you shot him at. Thanks for sharing this with us, makes you look at life a little differently.

Matej:
Someone - a Frenchman - once pointed out to me that Doisneau had done a photo of a dog with a similar device. While I am familiar with Doisnea's work, I can't recall ever having seen that photo. It would be much appreciated if someone could provide me with a link to Doisnea's photo.
FWIW, this dog was standing alone, waiting for its master, on a busy, narrow sidewalk in New York. The sidewalk was under repair which is why the dog is standing on a textured steel surface. I knelt down and tried to engage the dog before taking the shot. However, the dog stared straight ahead and ignored me. I took a few exposures, with people stepping over and around me, but the dog still stared straight ahead. Then, as if it finally decided to give me the shot I wanted, he lifted his head and stared out into the distance with a noble look and I got the shot.
Thanks to everyone for all the nice comments.
Dennis

I can't help but be reminded of Robert Doisneau's 'Dog on wheels' photo. One of the things I like about that image is that while the dog clearly plays an important part, Doisneau's image also offered a view of the broader situation. That is something I miss here. Although it is already a strong photograph, it does not satisfy my curiousity as to what the wider context was.

You can't keep a good dog down... never.. I have seen pictures of this type before.. mostly with Dashounds... there backs start to go on them. But this shot should speak to all of us and should make us think twice about some of our so called hardships. Look at this dog... SURVIVING. Nice low shooting tech. maybe even lower as to look up on this little guy. This guy should not be looked down on.. but rather with a low shooting style like you did here, ... like we are looking up to him. Cause I am looking up to him right now... suddenly that overdue phone bill doesn't seem to bother me as much.. as I admire the currage of this dog. Thanks for showing this one. Great shot!!!
