James, hard to guarantee perfect results as there are quite a few variables here, unless you've got time to set it up which you didn't have. I'm not a digital user so I'm guessing a little, yes, setting A to max would give a higher shutter speed but then the focus has to be right on with little room for error (autofocus could be quite easily fooled in this fast moving situation too), perhaps in such conditions you could change the speed rating of the camera to something like 800 asa equivalent which would give you a better aperture/shutter speed ratio for the shot. Dof is not so important here as you need to subjects sharp and the pan will take care of blurring the background.
I think that could be the best answer, with digital you have that flexibility to alter settings for each shot but of course you still have to run and get that shot so perhaps you just get it anyway you can, and in this case well worth it because it does a great job in conveying a moment and as I said before made me wonder about the people.
Interesting that you used flash as that can also help, go for the higher shutter speed, narrow apperture and use flash to pick out the subject.
On reflection it would be really hard to have done much better.

Thanks Ian. The shot isn't the sharpest. I had just had breakfast and was standing on our rooftop courtyard in Cuba. I heard the side car and took two shots in rapid sucession. Light was a poor and I did't have much time to set the camera. What would you suggest to get the pic sharper - setting a A value to max?

James, an interesting travel shot,always good to see images from unfamiliar places especially of the people and a little insight into their lives.
Makes me wonder about the relationship between the people and where they might be going. The pan is good although the subjects are slightly blurred and I'm sure the shot will encourage you to try more of this type of technique.

Great instinct and great touch. I love this type of shot from the high vantage point. I assume from the optical compression that you were closer to 200mm setting. Considering the difficulty of this type of shot, it is perfectly framed.
