OH wow. That does sound easy! :) I have been trying to figure out how to get some portable "inexpensive" (i.e. not $200) backdrops b/c I am trying to do more in-home portraiture and that isn't condusive to hauling in and setting up stands and lights and large backdrops. (that was more than anyone veiwing your photo wanted to know, but I really appreciate your replying to my question! :)

Take care and I'm sure I'll be viewing more of your work soon. :)

Hi Sara, thanks for your kind comments! Its really quite easy but needs 3 bits of black polar fleece and a tad of photoshopping. I hang a large 3m x 3m polar fleece as the background, you can get away with less but it gives you the flexibilty to do bigger kids and adults. This baby was also taken with his mum and dad with the black background. For these close ups though you probably only need 3 pieces of polar fleece 1m square. I made his dad wear a dark black long sleeved jumper (sweater), I draped a polar fleece over dad's knees and tucked it into the back of his jeans and I draped another polar fleece over baby's tummy and legs, leaving only baby's arms and head visible. This particular shot had some of Dad's wrist and forearm visible so I carefully painted it away. With black it is easier to paint than clone as you can be so very precise. Hope this helps - I used studio heads but window light works just as well and if shooting bw then even a couple of lamps will do it. I'll attach a window lit more natural version.

I love this too! Absolutely precious, more than words can describe!!

I do have a question for you for personal gain. How did you get the background black all the way around the baby? I have tried a couple and can't get it to look right. If you'd rather not reply I understand too. :) Thanks, Sara

thanks Dale Ann - I liked this better than the straight 'head' versions.

Amanda, great picture. This is a shot that every father everywhere can love. It really communicates the fragile nature of a baby. Great job!

thankyou Isaac - I agree with the manicure but this was a commission so i can't do much about that !! I too wondered with the baby's arm and the exposure but I think that baby is just a fair bubba. I actually went through other photos to see if it was exposure or skin and decided that I think it is baby. Unfortunately I can't upload a shot from that as I don't yet have a model release (although these shots are fine as they are 'generic baby' so to speak). Thankyou for stopping by.

Very nice capture Amanda. It's amazing how important a good manicure can be at times, huh? ;-)

The man's hands are lighted very well but IMHO the baby has perhaps a 1/2 stop too much light on those beautifully formed arms. Overall, just an awesome capture

So fragile and precious. Great shot. It should work well in B/W.
