I think I'll get to El Centro late in the afternoon and stay overnight. That way I can get up and in place to catch the sunrise out there, and spend all day shooting. I'll shoot 35mm, medium format and digital. The people out there are really something -- real characters. I hope to get lots of shots of them, both candid and posed.

George, thanks for your comment. Yes, Slab city is a truly funky place. I'm going to make it back out there to shoot with my Nikon D100. The last time I was there, I used my old Nikon Coolpix 995.

I see someone else has found Slab City. Good composition and color. Too bad the desert sky was carrying so much dust. I think I'll head out that way when it cools down -- maybe October.

I like this one also. I'm going to opt out of the techno-freak discussion this time. It's fine the way it is.

Ian, you're absolutely right in trying to make an image as good as possible. Interestingly, I shot that day with a friend who was shooting 35mm film and using a polarizer too. some of his shot seemed to have more atmosphere. In fact he got a hazy look similar to a sandstorm. He claims it was the difference between digital and film. They seem to have differences in their sensitivities. Had I had my Nikon D100 at the time, perhaps the difference would not have been so dramatic.

Oh I'm hating this. All this techno stuff on such an inspired scene! It IS dramatic but... right... polariser...thanks.

I only had a skylight filter on the lens. Perhaps if I had a polarizer on, it would have helped make it richer and more dramatic.

Yes but what is it about that, the close bit's fine, (it's all actually awesome) but the change going further back. Would a filter have helped?

Ian, it was an overcast day in the desert. I suppose that i could have increased the contrast to make it "pop" more.

Lordy!
I don't have the faith but I believe in the hermit! And if jesus was alright by him thats fine by me! This is miraculous!
What is happening to the tones between the sign and the background because I used to get so depressed when the colours washed out in the distance like this and think there must be SOME way it could be rectified.
