for me the narrow DOF works all right,as the flat lighting does also. i agree a much wider dof and dramatic lighting might be nice, but it doesnt mean one alternative is better than the other. personal taste comes first,in my opinion ;-) btw, your title is a song by Long Ryders i like a lot. be happy Robert! kostas
Ray, your comments are much appreciated. I will try more DOF again soon. I tried for a narrow DOF because I thought it may look good, alas, not to be. You only learn by trying and this is a great forum for learning. I did feel the lighting let me down, a bit of shadow may help to add drama as you have mentioned. Thanks again.
hi Robert, nice idea for a thematic still life, I feel several things let this image down
depth of field is too restricted, if taken in available light maybe you need to use a tripod or other device to hold camera and slow down shutter, still lifes aren't going anywhere
arrangement is a little static, if you arranged the objects to give more depth, which increased DOF would allow, and introduce leading lines would add interest
lighting is too flat, more dramatic side lighting would add drama and interest
try again, still lifes are fun and can teach a lot about all aspects of photography
