Hi Aaron
Thanks for your email and comments.
I'm not sure who you contact for permission to get in to Tokanui. I just turned up there jumped the fence got kicked out by a security guard. Returned a couple of days later same thing happened. Returned a week later jumped the fence and luckily for me it was friendly security guard on duty who found me and let me in.
I had an email 12mths ago from the property managers whose name I can't remember wanting to know how, where and when I got in ...... the weren't happy.
My best advise is to try the same approach.
Mark

Excellent.. makes me happy that is tilted... modern constructions of sanity, through the discovery of its alleged opposite, legitimated under the label 'for their own good'.. this message is all over again.. who said they closed these things down?.. the immates are in the dark corners behind us and the 'normal' ones flirt with the power's smile, constructing new civilising policies

Thanks Ian
The window which had a view of the tree in the play area in fact has had no treatment at all, that is the way it was shot. I knew that the film couldn't handle the contrast that was evident so I exposed for the the interior and let the light outside the window burn out. I could have gotten around this digitally of course but was happy with what i got.
The floors in this particular ward were Rimu but covered with an ugly linoleum. The newer (is that a word) wards had partical board floors.
Cheers Mark

Good to see this on front page, Mark. The shapes look do a lot as a thumbnail alone. And the window I assume you messed with, still looks like it was from the same shot and not a paste, to my eyes, so I reckon it was a successful treatment, but still a disturbed outlook! I'd definitely discharge against medical advice here. Those particle board floors get pig ugly after the sun's been on them for a while. I assume that's what they were.

This picture has a sad atmosphere...but a really great work of this depressing room and place. You might have interest to look at Bradley Prues portfolio, who photographed a series of an abandoned house like this in USA...also a very sad message...but excellent shots,as yours... Regards,Ursula Congrats for the SC!

Hi a.e
Thank you for your kind words, and I am humbled to think that I have inspired you.
Tokanui opened in 1912 and was closed down in 1998 and has been empty ever since laying waste to the elements and the animals that manage to get in and often unable to get out again.
It's nice to know that you have followed this series, though I am thinking of turning off the light on it shortly as I need to concentrate on other things for this work. An exhibition will be my first aim. I have a lot of images to edit so I need to get onto it sooner than later. I would like this work to be seen as this place will be gone forever soon. I will post a few more for you.
Go for the train station but keep safe.
Regards Mark

When was this place in operation...? Damn...this series is just so haunting.. I friggin love it. There is a building in my city..it's an old train station...I've been dying to photograph it for years...It's in a really really questionable part of town and is occupied by homeless people and rodents... I wouldn't be the first to hit the place with a camera...but well...you've inspired me.

This particular roll of film was damaged at the lab during the processing of the negative. This left the emulsion damaged which has resulted int the stains that are evident in the print.
I decided to leaves these as visible marks as I think they add to the final image . The Stains were like an indelible impression that this place left upon me.
