About This is only a lens test.

f5.6 @ 1/350, tripod, RAW mode.

Granted it is not the greatest composition, and frankly if I had known that the image would have been this detailed I would have been much more careful about dead leaves, etc.

Critiques are always welcome, but this image is not really one I am posting for feedback. Just a test.

Bob, it is about all I can do to make sure the subject is somewhere in the frame and that I shoot enough frames that one of them has minimal shake blur. And now you are suggesting that I have to think about that pesky histogram?? I might have to go back to film.

Seriously, I appreciate your info and will try to incorporate it into my thinking.

Thanks again :)

Yes that is leaning. :) Noise is generally found in the shadows and backgrounds of consistent colors. It is increased when your histogram leans is left of center, and you try to increase the exposure.

It is fairly well accepted now, MarySue, that when you expose your image, get you histogram as far to the right on the scale as you can without blowing highlights.

There is a good article on the benefits of exposing to the right. It can be found here if you are interested:

Bob, you are right on all counts. Like I said, I was mostly testing the lens...but what I meant by that was I was just seeing how the DOF worked. You know I think with a macro brain, and am still unsure about using a longer lens.

The ISO here was 800, WAY higher than I usually shoot, but I had not readjusted it from shooting in low light the night before. As far as 'leaning histogram'...not sure I follow you. The entire curve was shifted to the left side of the histogram, really in the left half only. However, looking at the curve itself, the highest peak was on the right. Is that leaning?

I'll shoot more with this lens at a smarter ISO. This was mostly to see what kind of quick image I could get with my new toy!!

Thanks for the questions, though. I'll think more carefully about these issues in the future.

What ISO did you shoot at Mary Sue? This looks a bit noisy in the greens.

Was the histogram leaning right or left as shot? A left leaning histogram will create some noise when you bump the curve.

Perfect seperation of subject from background! I love the motion created by the softly curved flower spikes. Great "test" you get an A+

If I had a seed and flower magazine I would have chosen this to represent what would grow frome it's seeds. It's so natural even with the dead leaves... Beautiful Photograph Mary, Great colors and clarity. Well presented.

Thanks for sharing?

I agree, the DOF, details and colour are superb.

i tend to think this photo is better than you think!

dead leaves are part of life, making the plant not look like plastic but something REAL.

nice DOF, sensible use for tripod.

Good shot - HB
