it is nice from you to tall the secret.Unfortunately, I don`t have equipment to make good photos,so I have to scribble and upgrade them on pc.It is dangerous beacuse it could bring us in trash of a work of art, but I graduate sculpturing so it helps. Thak you very much

Jennifer, I do know what you mean. My camera is only 4 megapixels so I have to be carefull about composition - not necessarily a bad thing. One thing though desaturation is not the best method to convert to B&W - instead, try using the channel mixer - see here. BTW this is an excellent site with tons of info.

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/b-w_better.shtml

The article recommends keeping to 100% - I ignore that

Another method I use is this:
http://www.adobe.com/tips/phs8colorbw/main.html

I usually try them both and see which one looks better.

thanks, vladimir. I desaturated the photo completely in PS & then added the blue/cyan tones in afterwards. Someone just taught me this toning process & i've been having a lot of fun playing with it - & yay, no chemicals! :O) Did you work on your self-portrait series in PS or by hand & then scan them? You do great work - very powerful & original - & inspiring.

hi jeff - yes, the shot was hand-held but i actually didn't do any sharpening to the image. I think the effects you're seeing are from the desaturating, toning & levels work i did on it - all as a jpeg - so definitely some loss of quality there. I guess i'm going to get much larger files to work with with my new D70 so shouldn't have as much loss of info even with jpegs in the future. :O)

While the eyes are indeed, stunning....it is the thoughtful, intense expression on your face that I find fascinating. I agree with prior comments, that it takes a great deal of guts, to put yourself in front of the lens, for all to "pick apart". It is a courageous shot, that I find remarkable! ..Brad

Hi Jennifer, great job here. Those eyes are really mesmerizing. Amazingly captivating and touching self portrait. To be honest it is in my perception disturbingly intimate und thus very brave to post. Atleast judging from your portfolio and your artistic skills manifested there I think you do not have any reason to look up to the rest of the world. Thank you for sharing. Best regards Jorg

Jennifer,
Beautiful even with clothes - LOL! Wonderful shot - good perspective and composition - the toning works so well. For shooting at 1/15 sec, you did a good job - I assume this was hand held. It does appear that you oversharpened slightly with the Unsharp Mask - eyelashes look a bit halo-like. Was this due to the slightly long handheld exposure? Or maybe jpeg compression artifacts?
Jeff

Both your portrait shots are very good, even more so because you are taking them of yourself which adds a whole other dimension, which I feel shows extra expertise. I do not as a rule ever comment on photos technically, as I do not consider myself 'expert' enough to do so, but I do take notice.
Margaret
