Hi Toby,
First of all, I think it's nice that you tried, and included, the crop I wondered about!
Now, having a chance to look at both, I can see YOUR like of the original better. The posts lead the eyes to the horizon and the "emptiness" beyond (the "far" feel of the shot)...
I like that, but also like the second, cropped version with its emphasis on the texture, greys, etc (the "near" feel of the shot)...
Two completely different "takes" from your one photo! (I guess I shouldn't even mention how it might look even further cropped down to just above the farthest post...square format :-) ).
That's one of the great things about photography!
Bottom line...I like it either way.

Personally, I like the feeling of the original. I like the vast emptiness of all that stark sky, small horizon, and those strange round pillars. I think the new crop kind of takes away from that feeling.

FWIW...Have you considered cropping off most of the sky? For instance, you could leave a much thinner section of it to maintain the black horizon line with the lightness above and below. That, to me, would result in more emphasis on the posts and on the gradations of grey overall. It'd be even more "graphic"... Just a thought.

Paul,
The sky was a bland blue yesterday at dusk. No clouds. So I think the graduated filter would have only allowed me in increase my exposure time. a polarizer might have brought the blue out more in hindsight translating to a darker sky. To be honest, I kind of like the bleached out sky with the rocky breakwater making that black distinction between the two.

I like the strictly geometrical composition with that slight irregolarity of the objects. I also enjoy the subtle tones of grey.

Great viewpoint and the slow shutter speed has worked a treat. I can't make my mind up about the sky, though. It's completely bleached out, which adds to the stark geometric style of the image, but also makes the upper half a bit bland. Would a graduated filter have helped? (Digitally, or the real thing) Maybe, maybe not.
