Larry, you are funny. You will find a lot of bird breeder/photographers have a photo box. I haven't seen them for sale anywhere, but most people make their own. They can be made out of cardboard, wood, metal, perspex or whatever you like.
I made my own using wood for a frame and the bottom and back end of the box. The sides and top were enclosed with aviary wire. The other end was left open but I attached a large piece of material over the end to allow myself the ability of getting into the end of the box with the camera instead of having to focus through a gap. This gave me more flexibility on the angle of my photos.
There is a side door near the wooden end for easy access. The wooden end enables me to use backgrounds in the photos. I slip perches, props or whatever into the box near the background image and then put my selected birds in.I usually drape a white cloth over the top near the perches to control the light. By having it quite long I am able to get not only perch shots but natural flight shots. The birds have no hesitation in flying right up to me.
This box is portable but usually is stored in the feed room and then I just take it into whichever bird room I choose, which enables me to get the best light control possible.
I have attached a photo to show you what I mean. It is of poor quality, taken by my hubby while I was in the box.

It's okay to ramble Den. We are all guilty of that at times. But that is how we learn anyway. I agree that birds are difficult. I have a couple of photos in my portfolio of some of my birds. I also have a studio set up specifically for photographing birds and it works very well. One trick you might find useful is focus in where the bird will probably land and half press the shutter. When the bird is actually sitting there, follow through. Birds freak at flash and sudden movement, so if you can alleviate this problem in advance than half the battle is won. Hope that helps. Judi

Hi Judi. I'm not a bird lover in the accepted sense of the term, i.e that I keep or rear them although my Father raised budgies many years ago. However, I love to watch birds of all sorts and envy the freedom that they have. Of course, I love to photograph them but they are not the easiest of subjects so I'm still learning and picking up tips from other UF members. Thanks for your interest and I'm going to be watching your portfolio closely. Time doesn't always allow me to comment as much as I'd like but that doesn't mean I don't admire. Hey, I've rambled on a bit haven't I? Dinner's ready.

Thankyou Ameed. I took this image in such a hurry so the little bird wouldn't become stressed and it wasn't until I saw the image on the computer that I felt I could've done better. I am glad that you think it is suitable like this and thankyou for the wonderful compliment. Unfortunately the little bird is no longer with us. Judi

Thanks Margaret. I am sad to say, that this morning he passed on. Unfortunately that can happen without much warning. Some are stronger than others and do reach adulthood without any troubles while others, just struggle all the way. Judi

Teunis, thanks for having a play with the image. I encourage that. I checked my monitors callibration a couple of weeks ago and it was spot on. I wonder, if you are seeing the image dark, whether your monitor isn't showing you true accuracy. Nevertheless, I also respect individual opinions, and yours especially. Judi

I must say Judi your work's quality is moving up big time, i like this one here, and i am against you regarding the DOF, i think it can't be better, putting the focus on the bird and leaving the flower a little out of focus makes all the concentration on the bird, actually it meets my taste like this, very well done, regards,
