About
Picture taken at the bicentennial mall in Nashville, TN. I really thought that these marble markers where interesting. Here is what the inscription says:
North / South Union / Confederacy The civil war is our only ?felt? history ? history lived in the national imagination. This is not to say that the war is always, and by all men, felt in the same way. Quite the contrary. But the fact is an index to the very complexity, depth, and fundamental significance of the event?the Civil War?was, after all, a civil war. the prototype of all war, for in the persons of fellow citizens who happen to be enemy we meet again. With the old ambivalence of love and hate and with all the old guilts, the blood brothers of childhood.
Since the subject is so somber, I think it is well you presented it in B&W. I agree with Gabrielle it would improve if you moved in close and let the words be read directly. You would still have the background. Del.
I think this is a really nice shot, works well in B&W and is well composed. I think what might work nicely here is if you were a little more on center and if the scene was simmetrical. Just a thought.... I could be wrong ;o)
Wow, powerful image and strong words. I've read a lot of books and seen a lot of movies on this war... I can just imagine what it was like to have family against family and to watch a way of life die... nice food for thought. B&w was a nice choice and I like the grain you used.
nice capture of the dilemmma of war. I think you could move in a little closer. I am always going back and rephotographing places to try and improve on my first image. This is often well worth the effort.
artwork of other artwork, in this case, a photograph of a pair of statues, is always difficult to pull off without looking like a snapshot or postcard. I'd revisit these and make the composition more abstract: tighten and level the scene, make sure the uplights in the ground are both fully in the frame, and then line it up so the black bullet light posts converge behind the markers on equal angles. and then, take two shots, one with and one without someone on the bench, and see which one works better.
