About A series of three portraits in black and white, with the light through a window as the only element to create the brightness, before it fades away in the gloomy darkness of the background and into oblivion. The intention (or idea) behind this series is that I wanted to express the contrast between the visible happiness and safety (by the facial expression in the portraits) and the more ominous / insecure sides of life, represented by the dark background, blending the two by making the subject fade away into the background.

This is as close to the original print I made as I could. Again quite a poor scan, but considerably better than the previous upload.

Part II: Innocence and affection

Don't know about you, but I love this shot, even with (or maybe because of) the softness.

All constructive comments, as usual, are much appreciated!

Cheers,

Hugo

Excellent portrait! I love the hat, her expression, the lighting and the B-W.

I do like Saeed's rework eliminating the person behind but that introduced lighting problems via the hat. Notice the hat is somewhat see-thru so when Saeed blacked the sillouette behind out, the lighter colors on the left upper edge of the hat no longer looked realistic.

Because this picture evokes a feeling of being from another era, my suggestion would be to have the model wear a different, vintage type accessory instead of the gleamy, smooth, modern gold earring. But that's just a minor detail, this is a superb picture as it is.

a 7+.

Hi Hugo,

As everybody, I like this one the most (cliche...)
The shadow helps to increase misterious feeling.
I also think that you achieve your intension "...I wanted to express the contrast between the visible happiness and safety ... and the more ominous / insecure sides of life...". Beautiful lady with wonderful and tender smile / shadows on background.
The main objective is there!
... the light is great, nice capture... (cliche again...)
Lori found what can be the only thing that is not perfect, those two white circles on the top left...

One of your best series, because there is an interesting evolution, till the main objective.

Cheers

Hi Hugo.Softness must be an author choice, I will accept it as his free choice. As a soft portrait I rate it with top mark, 7. Expression, composition, your idea is well done in the portrait. That?s why I vote high. Now, my own opinion, as if was mine the shot.I?ll go for sharpness, contrast, detail.Because that is my own way, not yours. So, when I do a portrait I do it my way. When a comment a portrait I look at the way author got what he was looking for.In other words, if I reach his goals. You did.
Regards
jorge

Beautiful portrait with a nice expression... well captured. Great tones as well.
I don't know how the photo looks "the whole"... I have to scroll it a bit because of my screen's size, but for me it works when I "scroll away" a few pixels from the top of the hat. A "smaller" framing maybe makes the expression on her face even stronger?
Anyway... it's very nice as it is.
Best regards, Alex

I like this shot as well because of the softness. There is a wonderful contemplative and tender expression on her lovely face. The parted lips as if ready to speak. The glasses and hat a distinctive classy touch.

Hi, again,Hugo, after reading all these "hard" critiques, there?s nothing to say. I agree with Saeed?s re-work.. the bg is a little distracting.
But if you have uploaded them in separate, all of them would look perfect.
Thilo is right: the first should be the last, closing the series.
But anyway, I like them very much...and the softness adds a special mood in all of them.
Cheers!

A bit more insecure than the previous lady, perhaps more sensitive as well? The lighting is probably the best here. As for expressions, I like pic I the most, she is really dreaming and makes you dream as well ...

Hello Again Hugo!
I think what I like best about this photo is the woman's gaze behind Her and the very candid look of the portrait!
It's just so natural looking!
The softness does enhance the overall look and the light is mayby a little harsh on the side of Her face but still a very good portrait!
Congrats My Friend!
Always the best............JOHN

Hi Hugo,

luckily I don't care at all about photography 'perfect' shots, I can say that 'cause I don't have the knowledge to judge on that.

For me photography is at all a very emotional, inspiring way of expression. I like a photo or not, and at the end it is only my own personal feeling.

And I like this serie. There is nothing more to say.

Take care my dearest friend.

I lost this one of the last tryptich by you Hugo may be it compete with the first in its beauty; you are right about softness and I agree; imagine it without that disturbing (it captures my eye) white circle in the upper left part

now the theme makes sense!
the darker areas and the shadows in this image do look terrifying and lurking with bad possibilities!
maybe its because the shadowed area is a blurred figure of a man?
Hugo u really know how to arrange the images in series!
perfect work! 7++

Hi Hugo,

I'M BACK!!

I like this photograph very much, the best of the three, in my opinion!!

I like the soft expression and especially the lighting. I like the bit of rim light on the left side of her face. I like the depth in this image very much, the idea of seeing beyond...THAT WORKS!!

I do think you have achieved in this one what you initally sought to accomplish. VERY GOOD!!

And, would you believe, only one thing to 'nit-pik' about...the round light circle; actually there are 2, but only the brightest on bothers me.
Other than this, very nicely done image!!!

Lori :)

hugo, very nice tones and details on this one. very nice light showing us the textures in the hat and coat and details of her face and even the oof background. great dof, btw. lovely background with some apparent activity adds a touch of dynamics to it. too bad about the scan. it creates a bit of a posterization effect in some of the shadow areas. this isn't a big deal as b&w covers it up nicely. another very nice portrait!

take care,
tom

Hi Hugo, very interesting series, I apologize because I could not comment all the photos, but I?m have always little time to spent in UF. This one is my favourite for the shadow behind her. It has something menacing and terrible that contrasts very much with her calm and sweet smile and this attracts me a lot. The softness that I see also in this shot doesn?t really disturb me, I don?t think that sharpness is important element for a portrait, on the contrary, too much sharpness takes away magic and mystery and this photo has a lot of both. I like it! Bye Max

But great!

It's the best of the three... Everything fits now. And I believe this one approaches more to your purpose. The background, here, is some kind of misterious... Those shadows behind the (beautiful) woman create some.... tension! (I read this before, somewhere else! ;-)))))) - you're a great teacher!) LOL
See ya dear friend!

Hi there Hugo.
As usual you make me crazy with your works especially in this series you show us how it is possible to emotion throught images always original, always each other different but always with a common element: EMOTION.
What an incredible smooth atmosphere (You right I agree with you) this shot is what i define "photo feeling at first sight" in its semplicity I can discover the different aspects (feelings) you mentioned before in about.
All the best for you Hugo!

Omar Rifaat   {K:10141} 10/5/2004
To me it seems as if the woman is torn between her (habitual?) loyalty to the man who appears in the background who represents stability, routine, predictability and another who she now catches a glimpse of who represents passion, risk and uncertainty. She is torn between the two, innocent, but awakened.
That is my interpretation, but certainly the image is 'loaded'!

Saeed Al Shamsi Saeed Al Shamsi   {K:47735} 10/5/2004
If we fellow the beauty of B&W portrait photography ,this one explains and appreciated one, but to enriching the value of high light and value attractive separation ,I?ll go to the second one, as I mentioned somewhere before that the photo finish and ready after a retouch, either in the studio old habit or the newly studio editing tools, many mentioned that ,this image is directly from the camera NO, PS,No Adds, seems if some one did a finishing in PS ,the image lose its "virginity".. The best photographers finish their best famous images in the studio, so why we should not do it! What bother me and others is the white light on the top left, as this is a close portrait it needs some tight crop and editing tool. As it is I?ll rate it 6.9,with editing as I did in the attachment I?ll rate it +7,it is yours and it is your choice, last this is a excellent quality portrait which need a retouch to be more elegant. Cheers,Saeed

Excellent series of 3 lovely similes.

Choice of B&W is perfect for these type of images where attention has to be kept as close as possible for the emotion and affect of the face.

Wonderful imagination to pick up a theme like this one. Even harder to capture it. You have managed it very well and come up with not only impressive results but also appealing and pleasant images.

Congradulations, Hugo.

Regards,

Randy Lorance Randy Lorance   {K:24769} 10/5/2004
There is a certain quality to this shot that sets it apart. I look at it and am about to proceed on,but then stop to look some more.
Whether it is the softness, combined with the noise...or the perspective, looking slightly upward and framing the shot close at the bottom with extra space allocated at the top and left as she peers beyond the viewer...or possibly even benefiting from what you say is a poor scan...there is a realism to this person that one can connect with more readily than a perfect model in a perfect pose with all the standard 'rules' of portrait photography followed perfectly.
Wonderful lighting and tones.

I like this portrait too and I am pleased to see that while you are showing three photos on the same theme, we are seeing three quite different light situations. Here it seems as if the sun is right outside the window and you get a lot of direct light, allowing your shadow on the wall and quite hard shadows in her face. The harder light on her face also works with your stated concept here, something I find interesting.

Beautiful portrait Hugo, there is a slight element of surprise on her face - almost as if you have called out to her and you captured her just as she turned around ?

The toning is super and the softness is very good indeed.

Excellent photograph Hugo :-)

The only nitpick I could possibly make is the same that Thilo has mentioned regarding the circle of light in the top left - but that is all it would be.

Best wishes,
Steve

Thilo Bayer Thilo Bayer   {K:50358} 10/5/2004
Dear Hugo,

I will start with the third in series, not mentioning the previous one (will do that with the images itself).

First of all: Portraits are very hard to comment IMHO. At least for me ;-)

The BW setting fits the subject very well, and I agree with you on the "like it" part. The smile on the model, the soft look and front/side lighting create a fine harmony in the foreground. this area fits together perfectly. I see a second area in the upper left with a more "horrifying" mood. the shadow is something mysterious here and adds a second level of interest. I like this fact a lot.

anyway, there are two minor things I would like to throw in. First: the framing. I would add a light line around the actual image. the blown-out areas in the lower right and upper left would get more support. Second (and this is something that weighs more for me) I would delete the round light source nearby the shadow. Not sure what this actually is, but it distracts me somehow. A possible third thing is the general brightness here which seems to be a tad high. at least at my monitor. But I honestly think that this is fine as it supports the mood here.

all in all: well done. as usual ;-)

take care,

thilo

You are right to like this shot, it is emotional and strong. This woman looks like coming from another era, she is tender and at the same time dynamic. If I am not wrong I can see a man in the background, this brings more connotations to my mind. I think that even your scanning adds to the atmosphere as it makes the surface of the photographical reality look subtle and atmospheric, fragile and smooth, eerie?.
It is interesting we work following a similar concept, of course I had not thought about it as much as you, mine had to do with darkness of bitterness left behind while yours is more optimistic and rich. Congratulations on the realization, I expect to see more!! And thanks for sharing!!777+ (just to honor the artist following usefilm semantics)

Yes, the softnes works great here. You know, I'm not a fan of flash and studiolike shoots. Imagine that with a uni background and flashlight. OK, you could use a 100speed film, but I don't think you could gain such an atmospheric shoot. BRAVO, Hugo!

Again a vey special and almost magic light.. really gives the woman a special look! Great us of DOF.. great expression and pose. Love the angle and composition here.. her hat adds alot! The light really enlighten it.. looks great. Once again its like she pop out from the picture.. almost like showing that she is special! =)

I love the tones.. and the light is magic!! The little grain and blur doesnt do anything bad to the picture i think! Its a strong and beutiful portrait my friend!

I really like your serie.. =) Superb!! 7+
