Ann - and the others who have commented on this staff choice image...Thanks you all for your kind words. I was out of town and unable to respond to your comments in real time. So now that I am back...yes the forground does not add a lot to the image at this time of day. later in the day the sun falls into this 'garden' and things look better. Unfortunately, I was not there later. As to the metal shed, its an artifact that Bodie was a working gold mine town during the turn of the century and there are a few items in town that we don't think of as 'ghost town' material. I have done some images where I have PS'ed out the shed and it does look more consistent. I was simply lazy on this image. Thank you all again who stopped by to look and offer your kind comments. Congrats on SC! What a great little ghost town. Love the church with the open door. I thought by the thumbnail that this was an infared since the colors are so different. This clearly is a nice "photo art" piece and I bet it may even be realistic in Sepia or B/W. WEll done!

John, two gorgeous shots put together but it's hard to match these. one the sun is in front the other the sun is already down. I've had problems and not caught it til others point it out. Good try tho and keep trying. Marilyn

A wonderful work of photo art John. Very surreal looking. I love the mood the sky has given it. The bright light shining onto the front of the buldings is so unusual the viewer is drawn into the rest of the image as if mesmerised. I love it and I love the dooming sky too. Fantastic details in the buildings. I reiterate what Don suggested about the foreground shadowed area being cropped out. It doesn't do anything for the image and is more of a distraction. A very creative image John. well done. Also congratulations on the SC award. Well deserved.

John, I don?t really feel qualified to critique this but, I?m going to anyways. I agree with the above post about it being ?fairly unconvincing? as an actual photograph, but, that?s why it?s in the photoart category right? You weren?t trying to fool anyone with this. Overall I like the lighting, it gives that surreal feeling, it gives you that feeling like something here is just not right, gives that feeling of uneasiness. And the tones almost look like color infrared. It?s an eerie composition to say the least. I like the fact that you replaced the sky; it fits the title and description. I like fact that the light and tones don?t match to the sky, once again supporting the title and description. In contrary to the previous post, I like the foreground; it looks like a small neglected and overgrown grave yard and adds to the ?ghost town? mood. The only thing I can see that might make this a more timeless looking/surreal image is to shoot at a slightly different angle as to get rid of the metal building on the right.

John, this is a great image. The use of the sky with this picture is just perfect. It conveys the message very well. I might suggest to crop a bit of the dense black from the bottom so it is not quite so heavy in that area. As it lacks detail nothing will be lost in this great picture. Very creative work. Don.

Great Photo Art image. The picture speaks for the high quality of your Leica camera and the great Summicron lens. I ma using the Summicron lens 50mm in my Leica M6 and also a 90mm Elmarit. After all the quality of lenses make the pictures...

It's a very harsh diffrence between the two used shots. But at the other hand, it does fit the situation. So I have to say you did well to do so.

Fairly unconvinging, I guess primarily due to the extreme difference in lighting/hues between the sky and mid/foreground. I would much rather see this location at dusk/morning in a long exposure setting, with a distant, deep natural sunset/rise beyond it,
