Hi Emgy, Thank you very much for your long and elaborate comment. It's always a joy to read your indepth description of yor feelings ad your opinions. I find them very constructive and extremely helpful. You deserved the featured critique more than anyone!

As to your comment, I am amazed by how presicely you described my intentions with this triptych; the build up, using the three different themes was all about the "tension" and the atmosphere; pleasurably at first, but steadily increasing to a (for some) uncomfortable level. Like the Herman Finkers song about the elfstedentocht; that was the initial idea I started off with.

The losing it part was something I added after reevaluating my stuff on UF; I've been experimenting quite alot lately, and have arrived to a point where I don't see any progression in the quality of it. Although I've learned alot about the different techniques, I think I lack the artistic impact to make the artistic images "tick". Bill Mahler pointed that out to me in a very effective way, so I decided to fall back on the subjects I think I'm more proficient at; the more clean and straight forward, if you see what I mean. So for at least a while, no more fill flash shots, no more fancy stuff, and see if my more basic type of photography has improved compared to a year ago. The pre-fixed ideas I have before I set out to take the shots will remain, though.... The pitvfall is, that it might make the more standard work too well planned, and thus losing it's sponteaneousness....:)

Still, your spot on description of the idea I had in mind with this series makes me wonder again. I'm very pleased it finally worked out to get that message across.

Take care,

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Hugo,
Sorry I?m late again but, as usual, I prefer to wait with commenting until I can see the complete series. It is for me the only way to get a real clue about the idea behind your work
I realize that I may be completely wrong, but that is not the point, I believe, cause, as we all know, someone?s work (yours in particular) is often likely to be interpreted in different ways. IMHO, this series of yours is all about the relation between ?tension? (yes, the word you seem to love so much!) and ?losing it?: the more tension increases, the more one feels like one is ?losing it?. To be honest, I hadn?t thought of the idea when I saw this triptych, your first one, but that is easily explained. It is a rather surprising set of images because the subject you used is a toy, something one can see and touch. Here you had me thinking of concrete ideas like, for example, the function of the object, its safety as a toy and educational purposes. You had me even thinking in terms of Mechanics, hahaha.! As for the technical aspect of the triptych, .my only remark is about the DOF being different in each of the images, which, I find distracting , The matter, however, has already been discussed broadly and you explained yourself pretty clearly about it. I began to get ?the idea? of the relation ?tension?/?loosing it? when I saw you second triptych: the singer winding himself up at the sound of the music and of his voice, feeling the tension growing until he loses control of his movements and until he appears to be completely absorbed in what he is doing?.. I like this one particularly for the gradual progress in the sense of dynamism, which seems to end up being almost explosive. Very strong presentation!!!! The third triptych is my favourite cause I think it says all about ?really loosing it? in a way that begins to become worrying and even scary (number of split personalities increases). You couldn?t have thought of a better end for this series. Perfect!!!!
Hugo?. I really admire your creativity and the fact that when you have an idea for one of your series, you really go out of your way to realize it. Not an easy work, this time?. I believe.
Groetjes en kusjes aan Willem

O'yea now ya went and did it....I will getting kicked out of yards and maybe even arrested for trespassing trying to shoot different yard decorations....lol
On the more serious side Hugo, these images are very well captured and they really make me look at them and think hard about shutter speeds. you got really good focus on the head in all 3 images.
If I could just remember to think while shooting it would help me allot.
Very well done and presented.

Dear Hugo,

it is maybe hard to expressive my feelings in english, but I will try my best, as I can feel that this serie is personally very important for you.

Please ask back if you don't clearly understand what I mean.

Sometimes you want to escape, loose from everything around you...but we cannot do that, there are people which count on you and love you until the rest of your life...

so what can we do, we search for ways were we can get lost in for a moment...free ourselves...

Do I read too much in the serie, don't know, only you can tell it...

Acceleration in which I can get lost for a moment would be a fast car, but that would be too obvious...so I like very much that you chosen a totally different object to show it.

a hug
Verena

Hi Hermen, Thanks for your reply. I guess I have created some misunderstanding here.... The discontinued shutter speed was intentional, and planned; I took a total of 25 shots, of which I selected three for this triptych. Technically speaking, I could've blurred the background more with the third shot, as that was well within range of my camera. With the first shot, however, with the first shot, the primary limitation was the shutterspeed needed to freeze the wings. I took a few with a different sensitivity too, but went with this one. Hope this explains it.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Hugo, a cheerful and funny triptych / sequence !
There were some comments on the change in the background. I do not completely understand your reply to Saeed (that the difference in background was created intentionally). Because you also said that you had to use a wide aperture for the leftmost image to get a shorter shutter time (i.e. the blurred background would be just an indirect consequence of the sharpness of your subject).
I must say I am also a bit puzzled by the (discontinuous) change in the background but maybe I should not comment on that before I have seen the subsequent images :)

regards,
Hermen

Many thanks for commenting on "Endless road"I like your adjustment wich is more pumped, the road is more accentuated but the foreground has lost details, therfore I think a much more intensive treatment is needed here to cope with the whole image

Hello Hugo.. again!
Very nice, original work... and funny as well. Great idea, well captured.
I just wonder about the first sequence... maybe a few more details? as in the 3-th sequence (more of the right leg and the body?)... somehow the "wings" in the first sequence take a bit more place than as they should do? or maybe that's what makes the work even funnier? Dunno, it's just an idea.
As about using different aperture in the photos: I don't think it's a problem... it works for me... it's just that the "subject" should (maybe) be the same in all the 3 photos, except the "motion", or am I wrong?
Best regards, Alex

PS: sorry not to have answered to your comments (thanks for them, very usefull), but I had a bit too many thinks to do... maybe it-ll be a bit better from now on.

Hi Hugo,

as you are talking in your replies so much about the upcoming in this triptych, you have to be patient for my comments, wants to wait until the end.

Cheers,
Verena

PS: about our project, I'm a bit worried that it might never happen, as I never really think when doing shots, already when I started in UF I stated that it is all about spontaneous in my work and it never changed for me...so it is hard for me to do photos based on a project, seems not working for me

Hi Thilo, Thanks for your comment. As a stand alone, I would agree with you about the background blur in the third. But this is not only a triptych within each shot, but hopefully you'll see the matching elements when I finish uploading the three photos. I'll explain things more thoroughly when all three of them are online.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf Hugo de Wolf   {K:185110} 10/22/2004
Hi Ted, Thanks for your comment. I'll gladly explain what happened, but first, I never set my camera on auto / program. I created this effect intentionally.

I set out and take these shots in the triptych with a fixed idea in mind.
The difference in background focus is easily explained. In order to get a short shuttertime on the first, I had to use a wide aperture (f3.5). For the second, I could do with a slower shutterspeed, so I went to a f/11 at 1/ 60'. The wind picked up in the third shot, so I didn't need to change the aperture, so that one has the same DOF. The different angle is because it was taken hand held, and the bloody think kept shifting in the wind.

The lack of unity was also intentional, as it fits with the thing I'm trying to get across with this triptych... A bit more patience. Won't tell you anyting yet, as it will spoil what I have in mind.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Hugo,

interesting start of the series. stay tuned for the rest ;-)

the progression from left to right is a nice effect. the corpse has the same sharpness through all over the pictures, just the propellers and the background differ. funny to watch. I would love to see the third one with a higher DOF as it would be more natural with the progression idea in mind. very minor nitpick though ;-)

you managed to fight the centering with three pictures in a row. elegant way, will keep that in mind =)

take care,
Thilo

You know..? This is one of the first pictures on usefilm that makes me smile! Very nice series. I wonder what happened? Because of the changing background I think your camera was on automatic control and something in the aperturesettings changed between two captures. Also your standpoint isn't exactly the same (it seems). Maybe you can tell us more about how you worked?

Hi Telmo.... Both...;o)

To quote my reply to Randy: "In order to get a short shuttertime on the first, I had to use a wide aperture (f3.5). For the second, I could do with a slower shutterspeed, so I went to a f/11 at 1/ 60'. The wind picked up in the third shot, so I didn't need to change the aperture, so that one has the same DOF." But in all honesty, that is besides the main point in this image, as I'll try to illustrate with numbers II and III in this triptych...

Hi Saeed, As always thanks for your honest opinion and comment. I do feel the need to respond though.

1. This is not an educational excersise.
2. Does there always need to be a point?
3. The difference in background was created intentionally.
4. Technical perfection is IMO not an issue here. The idea behind this series lies not within the individual shots, but wihtin the series... Just have a bit of patience....;o)

One more thing about the point of it, let's just say I started off simple, as this is not only a triptych within this particular upload, but the theme will continue to expand / explain itself in numbers II and III of this series.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo de Wolf Hugo de Wolf   {K:185110} 10/22/2004
Hi Carmem, thanks for your comment... The difference in background was intentionall as well as a necessity. The intentional aspect will become more clearyly when I upload number II and III. Let's just say I'm building it up, not only within the three images in this upload, but within the entire series of three.

Of course I don't get mad about a little humour! How could I? or better, Why should I? Humour is a vital element in our existence....;)

Cheers,

Hugo

Sure this image has a lot to say in basic photo creation for teaching purpose though other than that, I can not see any reason, `cos it is simple forward not too much manipulation or photo technique a part from the different shutter speed for motion purpose, which to me again should have aperture fixed figures, to get perfect comparison, good to see you back, waiting for the next images, regards,Saeed

Hi,Hugo, you are always showing a creative mind. I did a "3-steps" collage, few weeks ago, but it was not for being creative: it was a purpose of a photographic "hunt" of Treklens site.
I agree with Randy: since the subject was not moving, the background is expected to be the same..
I had this problem of unity in my picture because the subject ( a swan) was moving.. due to it, the lighting has changed.
This experience teachs something about technical aspects relating to the taking of the shot.. and UF is a perfect place to these discussions. Thank you for encouraging them.

I?m just waiting for II an III.. What are you going to do next?

Cheers,
Carmem

(Hope you didn?t get mad about my humorous note on your spider.... I actually consider it is a beautiful specimen.. In fact, I was joking with some comments...not with you experiences. I do admire your inventiveness in these propositions ofdiscussion .)

Hi Hugo...

Very original composition... I like very much the action between the three images... Complete acceleration, then losing accelationg to get to a complete stand still... Great color also, and the subject is really amusing...

What I think, in my must humble opinion, makes loose part of the harmony between the three images, is the apparently difference of DOF between tje firs two and the third...

Nevertheless, I like it a lot... You did a great job here...

Cheers,

Maria

Hello Hugo,

Its all depends upon how you look at things -

A glass can be hall full or half empty.

Here, the toy might have losts its fins in accelaration but GAINED a full blurry circle by the process.

You loose some to gain some, I guess.

Very interesting trytich.

Hi Randy, Thanks for your comment. Maybe I should've chosen an even smaller aperture by the same number of stops, to create a bigger unity.

Wait untill you see numbers II and III, I doubt if it's what you'd expect...;o)

Cheers,

Hugo

Great Hugo! An unexpected surprise, and nice to view a photo so full of levity, at the same time it is carried out perfectly to give the sense of action. One thing I wonder about is the apparently different DOF of the first frame and the second two, and think having all backgrounds in same focus would be a plus. I must set this as my background.

Ha Teunis, Dank voor je commentaar.... Wacht maar tot nummer II en III verschijnen, dan zal het wel duidelijk worden. Ik denk, dat het anders zal zijn dan je verwacht.... (Beetje voorpret, hier...)

Groeten,

Hugo
