About A long time ago the U.S. Navy operated a large number of diesel-electric powered submarines. The one in the middle of the group of three was mine. It took some unique qualities to serve in these craft. Now they are no more, and the special characters that operated them are old and gray. DBF.

Excellent photo George - this photo reminds me of that spoof movie "Down Periscope" which I enjoy so very much ;-)

Now I wouldn't mind taking one of these for a spin !

These were Gato and Balao class boats that had been upgraded with GUPPY I, II or III overhauls. Basically, they all got snorkels, improved batteries, new electronics (sonar, radar, comm gear, fire control). Some got new diesel engines; new sail structures were tried out, etc.
