mike, i love it! lovely deep blue sky interrupted by whispy clouds as a backdrop is just perfect. esp. with that moon. very nice!

btw, in you comment to carol you said:

1/3

If you bracket this would be important. With a digital camera this is mostly silly because I can shoot and review, delete, reset, and shoot again. Could be important for action where you don't get a second chance. -->

it actually has a bit more significance than that (at least on the D100). this setting affects more than exposure comp. but also the size steps used by the camera in P mode (might have to check on that again, but i'm sure i'll be corrected promptly if i'm wrong ;^)). but it will also affect the steps size of manual exposure compensation. that being the case, i'd suggest setting it at 1/3 which would give you the most granularity possible. if you're looking to keep it simple, set it at 1/2 and adjust to taste in PS (if you're shooting RAW).

take care,
tom

Carol:

As you get into playing with the camera and the two lenses, let me know how the Nikon glass compares to the Sigma glass. I have a manual focus Nikon 70 - 300 mm, but I can't focus the lens crisply enough using my eye (the resolution is insane..) I'm thinking of saving money and going with a Sigma telephoto since I don't often use a telephoto.

Another nice thing is that your 300 mm telephoto will work like a 450 mm lens on the D70. Nice for wildlife...

Thanks for the bounty of information on my new camera. I've had it in hand all week.... but it's been storming and flooding here and I've not had a chance to get outside with it yet!! The wait is driving me crazy! I'll play around with the settings and let you know how I fare! Oh, and yes, I also bought it with the 18-70mm lens... it should go nicely with my Sigma 28-300mm. :-)

The D70 is an excellent camera - hope that you bought the 18 - 70 mm zoom lens as well. I really like the zoom because it has a wide enough angle for landscapes (27 mm with the 1.5 conversion) and the 70 mm makes for enough zoom (105 with the conversion).

Be sure to mess with the settings:

Play Menu > ...

Shooting Menu > Optimize Image

Here you will want to tweak your Sharpening, Tone Compensation, Color Mode, Saturation. I zero out everything preferring to adjust in Photoshop and set the Color Mode to Adobe 1998. These only take effect on the more manual modes (P, S, A, M)

Shooting Menu > Long Image NR: I set it to ON, but you will have a long delay between long exposures waiting for the algorithm to run.

Shooting Menu > Image Quality

This can be set on command from buttons, but FYI if you have a large card go for RAW. The JPG compression, is moderately successful.

CSM Menu > AF Assist

This is a little light that shines when dark to help the auto focus. I chose to turn it off ever since I was at a concert and someone was kicked out after the performer complained about the light shining in his eyes. Not good.

CSM Menu > ISO Auto

I choose off - I can adjust the ISO and will intentionally shoot long exposures when I want.

CSM Menu > Grid Display

On. I take crooked photos without help.

EV Step > 1/3

If you bracket this would be important. With a digital camera this is mostly silly because I can shoot and review, delete, reset, and shoot again. Could be important for action where you don't get a second chance.

Let me know when you have the camera and have your settings finalized - I'd love your opinion!

Hi Michael, well exposed night shot. The tones are beautiful. The use of the last light to capture the geometrical shape of the Darth Vader building is superb; most of those details usually get lost because the lack of natural light. That's what makes this shot, but somehow, I feel there is more potential to this scene than this composition shows. That could be because of the highway, that sort of splits the image diagonally. Making more use of the counter diagonal, possibly by panning a bit more to the right to emphasise the street (and lights) in that area might've solved that, but it's pretty difficult to judge correctly. Good shot!

Cheers,

Hugo
